Agricultural enclave

Uddel is located very centrally on the Veluwe. The large amount of livestock farms from the area generates a continuous nitrogen deposition on the surrounding nature, creating an ecological problem for this Natura 2000 area and making the development of the region difficult. A transition is needed, from a global perspective, taking into account agriculture, economy and nature.

We shaped this transition together with residents, businesses and stakeholders, taking advantage of Uddel's scenic position, its strong community and entrepreneurial spirit. In this way, we turn the nitrogen problem into a flywheel for sustainable development.

Smartland designed this innovative collaborative design research process where stakeholders came together to envision the most sustainable and realistic future for the region based on the current qualities of the area, the challenges to face and the future opportuities. The definition of these qualities, challenges and opportunities come from the previous deep understanding of the landscape, the economic and social realities and people's concerns and aspirations.

With this unique process, Uddel becomes a captivating testing ground for integrated transition.
