Green transformation NRE terrain
As part of ‘!mpuls Slim Vergroenen Gemeentelijk Vastgoed’ of the UNaLab project, Smartland led the transformation of the former NRE gasworks site. The primary objectives were climate adaptation, combatting urban heat stress and flooding, and enhancing the amenity value of nature and biodiversity in the city.
Several key interventions were implemented. The existing brick pavement was opened up to introduce more greenery into the public space. Façade gardens were created along the edges of buildings to plant climbers that will grow on new structures, attached to the facades. A green façade was added to one of the buildings to improve the working environment and microclimate in the area.
Innovative BIO holder were integrated into the public space, referencing the industrial heritage of the site while promoting cultivation and circular practices. A BIO holder is a modular system of a rain barrel and a worm hotel as a compost collection point.
The entire process was carried out in collaboration with the local community. A planting day was organized to engage neighborhood residents in the development of the project, ensuring community involvement and ownership.
